Lifeguarding (Blending Learning Format)

Course length: 19.5 hours

The Blended Learning Lifeguarding course builds the same knowledge and skills as the traditional in-person training. The online format users to complete interactive lessons and activities on their own time, with instructor-led sessions to reinforce learning and skill building.

Prerequisites

  • Must be 15 years old on or before the last scheduled class session.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming
    on the back or side is not allowed. Must demonstrate the ability to swim front crawl and breaststroke. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are
      able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Certification Requirements

  • Successfully complete the online sessions.
  • Attend and participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass both the Section 1 – CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and Section 2-Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with a minimum of 80 percent.

Lifeguard Re-Certification

Course Length: approximately 13 hours

Lifeguarding Instructor

Course length: approximately 19 hours

The Lifeguard Instructor course trains users to teach:

  • Basic levels of lifeguarding
  • Lifeguard management
  • CPR/AED for the professional rescuer
  • Administering emergency oxygen
  • Blood borne pathogens training
  • Disease transmission
  • Basic water rescue

Sessions

2016 Lifeguard Instructor Dates will be announced at a later date.


Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 17 years old on or before the last scheduled class session.
  • Possess a valid certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Successfully complete the online orientation to the Red Cross
  • Successfully complete the online orientation to the lifeguarding course.
  • Successfully complete the online Lifeguarding Instruction Precourse Exam (80 percent or better).
  • Successfully complete the Precourse Session.

Certification Requirements

  • Successfully complete the online Session.
  • Successfully complete the Precourse Session.
  • Attend and actively participate in all course sessions.
  • Successfully complete class activities, including the four practice-teaching assignments.
  • Score a minimum of 80 percent on the Bloodborne Pathogens Training Instructor Self-Study Test.
  • Score a minimum of 80 percent on the basic-level Administering Emergency Oxygen final written exam.
  • Score a minimum of 80 percent on the instructor course final written exam.

  • Successfully complete the Online Orientation to the Red Cross
  • Successfully complete the Online Orientation to the Swimming and Water Safety Program
  • Successfully complete the Precourse Session

  • Successfully complete the Precourse Session.
  • Attend and actively participate in all course sessions.
  • Successfully complete class activities, including the four practice-teaching assignments.
  • Score a minimum of 80 percent on the instructor course final written exam

Courses can be requested throughout the year and must have a minimum of three participants to be offered.

No refund will be issued for if you are unable to pass the prerequisite skills evaluation and/or the lifeguarding re-cerfitication course.
