We offer group, private, and semi-private swim lessons with trained swim instructor for NCSU Students and Carmichael Members of all ages and abilities.

Group Swim Lesson

  • University Recreation is now offering Group Swim Lessons structured to promote safety, correct stroke technique, and personal development in the water.
  • Registration for our Group Swim Lesson programs takes place in Member Service Suite at Carmichael.
  • We do not offer make up lessons unless lessons are cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Course Dates: 5 Week course starting Saturday June 2

Student Rate: $75

Carmichael Member Rate: $90

Beginning Youth 45 minutes 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.

Group Swim Lesson Descriptions

Bootstrap Example
  • AGES: 2-5
  • The Preschool Course is focused on orienting children to the aquatic environment by helping them acquire rudimentary levels of basic aquatic skills. The objective of these lessons is to provide an increased comfort in the water by teaching survival skills and the fundamentals of swimming including blowing bubbles, gliding, bobbing, front and back floating, arm and leg movements for front crawl and elementary backstroke.
  • AGES: 6-12
  • The Beginning Youth Course is targeted for swimmers who do not know how to swim or still need support while swimming.The objective of these lessons is to help swimmers go from needing support while swimming to swimming on their own, through building of effective technique in front crawl and backstroke. Swimmers may also learn the fundamentals of other strokes including breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and treading.
  • AGES: 6-12
  • The Intermediate Youth Course is targeted for swimmers who are able to swim at least 15 yards without support in both freestyle and backstroke. The objective of this course is to progress swim skills in other strokes including breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and treading water. Swimmers may also learn more advanced skills such as stroke refinement, extending swim endurance, diving, and flip turns.
  • The Adult Course is recommended for swimmers 13 and older and all swim levels are welcome. This course focuses on the needs of the participants.

Private Swim Lessons

Private and Semi-Private Lesson Registration

  • The objective of our Private Lesson Program is to provide a program that meets the individuals swimming goals through one-on-one lessons.
  • Parent Child Lessons are available upon request. These lessons are meant to familiarize young children to the water and is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own.

Semi-Private Lessons

  • The objective of our Semi-Private lessons are designed for two participant with a similar skill levels.
  • We do not pair students together and this package must be purchased at one time.

Guidelines and Procedures

Bootstrap Example
  • Carmichael Complex parking lot is classified as "C" and is available before 7 A.M. and after 5 P.M. Monday through Friday. Visitors are encouraged to use the Coliseum Deck pay lot for parking. University Recreation will not be held responsible for any tickets received for parking outside of designated areas.
Enter the Carmichael Recreation Center and follow designated signs to pool deck. Please be prepared 10-minutes prior to your lesson time.

Locker rooms are equipped with showers and lockers.

Note: Family changing rooms are available
Parents and caregivers must go to the bleachers on the pool deck if they wish to observe lessons. For the children's benefit, no one is allowed in or around the pool during lessons.
No refunds will be granted after initial purchase.
The Carmichael Complex offers family swim on Fridays after 5:00 PM and during normal hours of operation on Saturday and Sunday. Children are allowed in the facility during their lessons, however swimming with your child before and after the lesson is not permitted on weekdays.

Note: Those taking lessons as an affiliate are not permitted to swim before and/or after lessons at any time.
After the initial purchase, clients have four (4) months to complete their lessons. If lessons are not completed in the 4 month time frame the lessons will be canceled at no refund to the client. Extenuating circumstances will be considered on a situational basis.
