University and Carmichael Complex Guidelines

Bootstrap Example
  • All individuals must have a valid Wolfpack One Card or be a participant or spectator of a University Recreation hosted event.
  • Unauthorized use of the facility is prohibited and considered trespassing.
  • All University Recreation members are invited to bring up to three (3) guests per visit to Carmichael Complex facilities. Guests must enter, exit, and remain in the facilities at all times with the University Recreation member.
  • Appropriate clothing is required in all activity areas.
  • Only clean, closed-toe, closed heel athletic shoes with non-marking soles are permitted in the activity areas.
  • No animals, with the exception of service animals, are permitted in the facility.
  • Bikes, hoverboards, rollerblades, and skateboards are prohibited in the facility. Bikes and skateboards must be locked on designated racks outside of the facility.
  • Motorized vehicles are prohibited inside the facility, with the exception of electric carts to assist persons with disabilities.
  • Individuals under the age of 18 are only permitted in the facility during authorized University Recreation sponsored events or during Family Recreation hours. During these programs they should be accompanied by a responsible guardian over the age of 18.
  • Movement of any equipment/furniture may only be conducted by University Recreation staff. All fitness equipment should remain in the part of the facility where it was originally located. Improper use, or unapproved modifications, of equipment beyond the manufacturer’s purpose are prohibited.
  • Use of outside training materials, especially items that may be considered a weapon, must be approved by the University Recreation staff.
  • Injuries, accidents, or equipment failures should to be reported immediately to University Recreation staff.
  • The use of tape or other marking materials is prohibited on walls, doors or floor surfaces unless approved by University Recreation staff.
  • Requests for approval to post flyers, signs or posters are directed to the University Recreation marketing and communications staff.
  • Anyone requesting to take photographs or video in University Recreation facilities must request permission from University Recreation marketing and communications staff.
  • We encourage and support persons with disabilities to bring trained assistants as needed. Any trained assistant supporting a person with disabilities may enter the facility at no charge (must be in compliance with guidelines by presenting a valid ID).
  • University Recreation and Health and Exercise Studies scheduled activities within the complex have priority. Any modifications of the schedule will be posted.
  • Food is prohibited. Drinks must be kept in a closed container.
  • Lockers are available for storage of all personal items. Personal items are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, ramps, stairwells, or activity areas.
  • University Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
  • Use of University Recreation facilities is a privilege. Anyone violating guidelines, including verbal, and/or physical abuse of employee(s) or user(s), criminal activity, disorderly conduct, or inappropriate behavior is subject to:
    • Immediate removal.
    • Suspension of membership.
    • Administrative referral to the Office of Student Conduct under the Student Code of Conduct or other applicable guidelines.
    • Criminal action.
  • University Recreation reserves the right to implement any additional guidelines that protect the health and safety of the facility and its users.
  • All individuals must have a valid Wolfpack One Card or be a participant or spectator of a University Recreation hosted event.
  • Unauthorized use of the pools without a certified University Recreation Lifeguard is prohibited.
  • Appropriate swim attire is required. Athletic shorts, sports bras, cut offs, etc. are not considered appropriate swim attire.
  • All swimmers must shower before entering the pool area.
  • No participant may hang on the lane lines.
  • Use of diving boards is prohibited during Recreational Swim.
  • Hyperventilation and underwater breath holding are prohibited.
  • Kickboards, pool buoys, and other swim equipment are for exercise purposes only and should not be used as flotation devices.
  • No animals, with the exception of service animals, are permitted on the pool deck.
  • Food is prohibited. Drinks must be kept in a closed container.
  • Glass products, alcohol, smoking, e-cigarettes or tobacco products are prohibited.
  • Diving, running on the decks, pushing and other horseplay around the pool is prohibited.
  • Any individual engaging in disorderly conduct will be asked to leave the complex by University Recreation staff or University Police.
  • Pools will be evacuated and closed in the event of adverse weather or any other potentially hazardous situations as determined by University Recreation staff.
  • Anyone requesting to take photographs or video in University Recreation facilities must request permission from University Recreation marketing and communications staff.

Family Swim
  • Children must be supervised at all times. Under no circumstances are children to be left unattended.
  • A parent must directly supervise children younger than 12 years of age and all children unable to swim at least 25 yards without stopping.
  • A parent must be within arm’s reach of any child unable to swim and/or using a flotation device.
  • Parents are not to swim laps while they are with their children in the pool.
  • Children older than the age of four (4) are prohibited from being in the Locker Room of the opposite sex.
  • Single Occupant Lockers Rooms are available for use.

  • No sparring, wrestling, boxing, or other forms of martial arts are permitted with other participants in the combat room.
  • No shoes or bare feet are permitted on the mats. Socks must be worn at all times.
  • Gloves must be worn when using heavy bags and speed bags.
  • Please do not remove the punching bags.
  • Food is prohibited. Drinks must be kept in a closed container.

  • Users must be 18 years of age or current NC State University students.
  • Collars are required to be used at all times.
  • Spotters are strongly recommended.
  • Participants must re-rack weights at the conclusion of the workout.
  • Dropping weights is prohibited.
  • Olympic lifting and chalk is only permitted on the Olympic lifting platforms.
  • Inverted exercises are prohibited from the top of any machine or squat rack.
  • Equipment must not be removed from the free weight room area.
  • Equipment must be used for the manufactured intended purpose only.
  • Please clean and wipe down equipment/upholstery after each use.
  • Always notify University Recreation staff if you notice any broken, damaged, or unsafe equipment.
  • Clean, closed-toe, closed-heel athletic shoes with non-marking soles are required in all activity areas.
  • Participants must wear shirts that cover the entire chest, back, and top of shoulders at all times.
  • Avoid loitering on equipment and allow others to “work in” when performing multiple sets.
  • Cardiovascular machines may be limited to 30-minute sessions during high usage hours.
  • Personal Training instruction is limited to University Recreation employees. Personal trainers not employed with University Recreation may not instruct clients within the Carmichael Complex.
  • Damage to property and verbal or physical abuse is not tolerated; violators will be escorted out of the facility and subject to disciplinary action.
  • Food is prohibited. Drinks must be kept in a closed container.
  • University Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
  • Lockers are available for storage of all personal items. Personal items are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, ramps, stairwells, or activity areas.

Olympic Lifting Guidelines
  • Bumper plates and Olympic Weightlifting bars may ONLY be used for Olympic Weightlifting on the platforms.
  • Exercises other than Olympic lifts and deadlifts are not permitted when utilizing the platform area.
  • Collars are required to be used at all times.
  • Spotting for Olympic Weightlifting is strictly prohibited.
  • Shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Control the bar back to the platform unless the lift is completely missed.
  • Chalk is permitted, but must stay in the designated Olympic Weightlifting area.
  • Olympic Weightlifting platform users must face the mirror while performing lifts.
  • All bumper plates and collars are to be cleared from the bar and put back in the proper location (bumper plates organized from lightest to heaviest) at the conclusion of the workout.
  • During peak times, allow others to "work in".
  • University Recreation reserves the right to implement any additional guidelines that protect the health and safety of the facility and its users.
  • I understand and agree to the following:
    • I understand that mobility and flexibility are a key component of Olympic Weightlifting movements. I will not perform lifts if I do not have sufficient range of motion or am injured.
    • I understand that there are only two grips acceptable for new lifters, standard and hook grips.
    • I understand how to “miss” Olympic lifts correctly.

  • Appropriate athletic clothing and clean, closed-toed, closed-heel athletic shoes with non-marking soles must be worn unless exceptions are made for the type of activity.
  • Street shoes and high heels are not allowed unless they have felt bottoms or are considered appropriate dance shoes. Tap dancing is prohibited.
  • Only University Recreation staff is permitted to operate audio equipment and unlock equipment storage.
  • Do not touch mirrors.
  • Cell phone usage is discouraged during Group Fitness classes.
  • All equipment must stay in fitness studios.
  • Cycling studio bike pedals and clips may not be removed.
  • Please sanitize equipment at the conclusion of class and return to designated storage.
  • Food is prohibited. Drinks must be kept in a closed container.
  • Lockers are available for storage of all personal items. Personal items are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, ramps, stairwells, or activity areas.

  • Participation is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Courts are primarily intended for basketball, volleyball, and badminton. Other activities are permissible if considered safe and appropriate as determined by University Recreation staff.
  • Damage to property and verbal or physical abuse is not tolerated; violators will be escorted out of the facility and subject to disciplinary action.
  • Hanging on the rim or net is prohibited due to the risk of injury and potential damage of equipment.
  • Participants must wear shirts at all times. Shirts that cover the entire chest, back and top of shoulder areas must be worn in all indoor areas.
  • Clean, close toed, closed-heel athletic shoes with non-marking soles are required in all activity areas.
  • Disassembling or moving equipment that has been set-up is not allowed. Ask a University Recreation staff member to set-up or remove equipment.
  • Use of tape or other marking materials is prohibited on walls, doors or floor surfaces unless approved by University Recreation staff.
  • Food is prohibited. Drinks must be kept in a closed container.
  • Lockers are available for storage of all personal items. Personal items are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, ramps, stairwells, or activity areas.

  • No climbing is allowed without University Recreation Outdoor Adventures staff on duty.
  • Individuals must obtain a belay card by passing a Safety Skills Assessment to belay at the NC State Climbing Wall. Users may climb at the wall who do not take this assessment, provided they are belayed by a Climbing Wall staff member or a current belay card holder.
  • Present your belay card to staff before climbing.
  • Boulder only at or below shoulder height. A spotter is required when bouldering. Do not traverse under top-roped climbers.
  • All climbing above shoulder height must be protected by a top rope belay, and climbers must wear a climbing helmet while climbing.
  • Always use a ground anchor when belaying.
  • Climbing shoes or closed-toe, closed-heel athletic shoes must be worn.
  • Personal climbing harnesses, shoes, helmet and hardware are allowed, but must be inspected by Climbing Wall Staff the first time you use your equipment at the wall. Equipment should adhere to manufacturer’s recommendations for use and care. Personal climbing ropes are prohibited.
  • Eco chalk balls are permissible. Gymnastics chalk and loose climbing chalk are prohibited.
  • Slackline may only be used with permission from University Recreation Outdoor Adventures staff.
  • Slackline may only be used by one person at a time. No jumping on or off of the slackline.
  • Guests of University Recreation members are allowed to climb at the wall when accompanied by their member sponsor.
  • Children 5 years-old and older are allowed to climb during open Family Recreation times, provided they can fit into a climbing harness and helmet safely, and can follow staff directions. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
  • Food is prohibited. Drinks must be kept in a closed container.
  • Lockers are available for storage of all personal items. Personal items are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, ramps, stairwells, or activity areas.

  • Drones are prohibited on or above the Miller Field Complex.
  • Fields will be evacuated and closed in the event of adverse weather, flooding or any other potentially hazardous situations as determined by University Recreation staff.

  • Trash and recycling must be placed in appropriate containers.
  • Any individual engaging in disorderly or unsportsmanlike conduct will be asked to leave the complex by University Recreation staff or University Police.
  • Children must be supervised at all times.
  • Drones are prohibited on or above the outdoor tennis courts.
  • Outdoor tennis courts will be evacuated and closed in the event of adverse weather, flooding or any other potentially hazardous situations as determined by University Recreation staff.

  • Sauna and Steam Room are public spaces; appropriate clothing is required (swimsuit or gym shorts) at all times.
  • Shoes are prohibited.
  • Lewd or suggestive behavior will not be tolerated.
  • Do not apply water to the sauna heater or rocks.
  • Do not leave newspapers, magazines or paper products in the Sauna or Steam Room.
  • For safety reasons, it is recommended that you limit time in the Sauna or Steam Room to ten minutes. Consult a physician for longer use.
  • Food and drink is prohibited.

IMPORTANT HEALTH NOTICE:

Due to high temperatures and humidity, Sauna and Steam Room can be dangerous to your health. It is recommended that all persons consult a physician before using these rooms.


Group Fitness Guidelines

  • Participants may not enter a class five minutes after the scheduled start time. Entrance is prohibited after five minutes ensuring that all participants arrive early enough to become sufficiently warmed up for the more vigorous parts of the class. Please respect this rule and the instructor when they enforces it.
  • Please inform the instructor if you have any special considerations (e.g., pregnancy, injury, illness, recent surgery) which may influence your ability to take a class.
  • Proper athletic footwear should be worn in fitness classes.
  • It is highly recommended that you bring aa water bottle and towel
  • Our Keiser bikes have SPD clips. Participants are welcome to bring cycling shoes that clip into our pedals, but may not remove the pedals and insert their own clips.
  • Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to class in order to ensure proper adjustments for bike fitting.
  • Please note that the group fitness schedule is subject to change due to special events and low participation. Each group fitness class offered must have three or more participants for three consecutive weeks, or the class will be taken off the schedule for the remainder of the semester.
